Sports Physical Q&A

Why would my child need a physical before going to school or joining a sports team?

A common part of growing and developing is changing health and wellness. A physical can provide the opportunity to monitor your child’s growth and development and to make sure that any potential issues are treated as quickly as possible.

Sports physicals complement annual exams, and their precise goal is to determine if your child is healthy enough to participate in sports. Each school district will have different requirements, which will be checked for during the exam. For some schools, a vaccination record will also need to be obtained before a child is cleared to participate in sports. This is to protect the overall health of the entire classroom, sports teams, and community.

Is your child planning on attending camp? Some organizers require kids to obtain a "camp physical" before registering. Similar to a sports physical, this helps ensure your child is physically healthy enough to participate in camp activities, like hiking and swimming.

How can I prepare my child for sports or school physicals?

The One World Pediatrics team will let you know if there’s anything special you need to bring to your appointment. This may include an updated medical record and a list of medications, prescription or not, your child is currently taking.

Letting your child know what to expect prior to the physical will help to prepare them as well. Some of the checks that will be performed can include:

  • Ears, nose, and throat
  • Blood pressure
  • Heart and lungs
  • Height
  • Weight
  • Eyesight
  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Feel your abdomen

If any vaccinations are needed, letting your child know ahead of time and talking about why they are important will hopefully help them feel more at ease.

What is the difference between an annual and a sports physical?

An annual physical exam is conducted by the One World Pediatrics team regularly and will include a variety of tests to record the child’s development and health.

Sports physicals specifically assess the child’s health and physical condition related to their ability to participate in the sport. Several of the tests will overlap between the two visits.

If your child is in need of sports physicals, request an appointment with One World Pediatrics. You can call the office or use the online booking form.
